放射線を利用して成長する菌類

Black Fungus Found in Chernobyl Eats Harmful Radiation Fungi could eat dangerous radiation to survive, an unexpected finding that could one day help feed astronauts in space — at least those willing to eat a crawling fungus.

The research began with the discovery of black fungus growing on the walls of the damaged, highly radioactive Chernobyl nuclear reactor and collected by robots.

The fungus was rich with melanin, the same pigment that gives human skin its color, protecting the skin from solar and ultraviolet radiation. Melanin is found in many, if not most, fungal species.

メルセデスを壁に埋め込んだロシア人

2008年1月23日

Mercedes at HomeOne Russian guy got so glued to his favorite Mercedes car that he couldn’t sell it when it became already too old for him. He ordered to cut it in pieces and mount the full length part of its body to the wall of his apartment before the renovation has started so that to implement it into the new look of his flat.
By the way this model of W140 Mercedes car was extremely popular in mid 90-s in Russia among fast-became-rich guys. It was often mentioned in the funny jokes about new arrived Russian rich guys, so maybe it was also a reason for this strange decision.

Frozen SeaSomewhere in Russia where it is so cold that some parts of the sea is frozen. The waves aren’t entirely frozen since it would literally take a huge drop in temperature while the waves are forming to create something like that.

Anyway check out 11 more pics of the frozen sea after the jump.

モスクワに建設予定の巨大ビル

2007年12月28日

Crystal IslandMOSCOW’S boomtown skyline will be dominated by the world’s biggest structure, a £2 billion “city inside a building” designed by Lord Foster.

Reaching almost 1,500ft into the sky and housing up to 30,000 residents, the Crystal Island will contain more floor space than any other structure on Earth.

Foster, whose recent British projects include the new Wembley stadium and “the Gherkin” office block in the City of London, said the tower is “the world’s most ambitious building” and symbolic of Russia’s renaissance as a world power.

However, some observers have likened the new Moscow skyscraper to a “Christmas tree” and dismissed it as “brash” and “vulgar”.
