NEWRY - By a margin of only a third of a second, a Boston couple claimed victory at the 8th annual North American Wife Carrying Championships held Saturday at Sunday River Ski Resort.

“We could never expect something this good,” said Keith Cardoza after successfully bringing Julia Stoner, his girlfriend of six months, through the 253.3 meter course.

For the victory, Cardoza and Stoner may receive $1,000 toward a trip to attend the World Wife Carrying Championships in Finland. The couple were also awarded a check for $675 (five times Stoner’s weight) and Stoner’s weight in beer. The latter amounted to nine twelve-pack cases.

Barinatxe beach near Sopelana, Spain, in the Basque region, will again be the site of the annual nudist foot race on September 15, 2007. The race’s organizer since 2003 is Jesus Iglesias, a member of the board at the Basque Naturist Association (Euskal Naturista Elkartea).

Inhabitants of the sleepy town of Hermeskeil in Germany took to the streets on Saturday, armed with dustbins - and safety helmets.

Rather than collecting rubbish, bins were used as vehicles for the 3rd annual dustbin race, with over 50 people attending the curious event.

Roads were closed to make way for participants as they raced down on customary bins.

A man from West Sussex has claimed to have set a new world land-speed record for a jet-powered street luge.

Joel King, 27, an IT worker from Bognor Regis, clocked an average speed of 112.7mph (181.4km/h) on a disused runway in Woodbridge, near Ipswich.

He described the luge as like a modified skateboard, on which he lies face up just 2in (5cm) off the ground.

Mr King said his speed was recorded by an expert but still had to be verified by Guinness World Records officials.
